This instrument is supported from below by its frame with the left hand, held with the drumhead facing out. The head and surrounding rim are struck lightly with the palm and four fingers of the right hand. Playing techniques exist in which the drumhead is struck by snapping the thumb and middle finger. Various rhythmic patterns (usul) are played. Used for both folk dance and folk song accompaniment. Han people call the instrument shougu.
