The body is pear-shaped. The resonator is made of thin strips of wood to which the long, thin neck is joined at the top. In Persian the name means "three strings". Around the turn of the century, the fourth (drone) string was added. The body of the instrument is placed on the player's knee, so that the neck is at a diagonal to his torso. The strings are plucked with the nail of the index finger of the right hand, typically with abundant tremolo. Used as a solo or vocal accompaniment instrument in classical music styles.
