A transverse flute used in hayashi ensemble of the no theatre, in narimono ensemble of the kabuki theatre and nagauta, and in accompaniment for certain folk performing arts. Constructed so that the intervals between notes in the fundamental and overblown octaves are uneven. The pitches produced are not regulated; each instrument produces a distinct pitch series. An additional, short, inner bore is inserted between the flue hole and the sixth fingerhole, which allows the hishigi (a very sharp tone and the highest on the instrument) to be produced. Covered with a specially crafted rattan.
