Holding the instrument vertically, the player covers the fingerholes with the fingers of both hands. Although a large volume of sound is produced, the instrument has a considerable dynamic range. It is one of the leading instrument in wind and percussion ensembles as well as in theatrical accompaniment. The instrument in the collection has a metal arabesque pattern (inlaid) on the surface. Also called pili, feng-guan, or touguan.
