A single membrane drum. The body is extremely thick, and the diameter of the membrane which actually vibrates is only about 5 cm. The instrument is placed horizontally on cords which extend loosely to the three legs of the stand. Played with two beaters, this instrument produces a piercing tone. Used in the accompaniment of traditional theater and in folk instrumental ensembles. In traditional theater the drummer, who acts as conductor, plays both bangu and paiban.
