The performer sits cross-legged with the instrument placed on his knees, holding it at an angle to his torso. The fingers of the left hand press the strings, which are sounded with a bow held in the right hand. The lower part of the bow, which should accompany the instrument, is very sharply curved, and is strung with horse or yak hair. Primarily used in folk and religious music.
