The strings are struck with a wooden mallet which has paper wound around the tip and is held in the right hand. The palm of the left hand is used to open and close the sound holes, producing changes in tone quality and also a percussive effect. vibrations are transmitted from one string to the other by means of a small wooden plaque which connects them at the center. Used in ensembles.
